Update to the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission Report on the Nation's Civil War Battlefields: State of North Dakota

The core battlefield area is 5,414.41 Acres, the study area and potential National Register area is 17,339.64 Acres, and the total area currently protected by the State Historical Society of North Dakota is 1 Acre.

Although exploratory drilling has had negligible impact on the topography so far, any full-scale effort to extract sub-surface resources from this area will devastate the battlefield's integrity. Oil industry activity in this area makes Killdeer Mountain North Dakota's most threatened battlefield.

Potential Preservation Activities and Public Interpretation include, advocacy, cultural resource surveys and inventories, interpretation projects, land or development rights purchased, legislation, planning projects, research and documentation, brochure(s), driving tour, living history, visitor center, and website.
